Call for Papers
The committee of the XII Encontro de Linguística de Corpus-ELC (The 12th Corpus Linguistics Symposium) invites scholars on Linguistics, Computer Science, Historical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Information Science, and other Corpus Linguistics-related fields to submit their papers of concluded research or of studies in progress in that multidisciplinary area. The 12th ELC will be held from November 6th to November 7th, 2014 at the Instituto de Letras e Linguística – ILEEL (Institute of Literature and Linguistics), at the Universidade Federal de Uberlândua – UFU (Federal University of Uberlandia), Campus Santa Mônica (Santa Mônica Campus), immediately after the VII Escola Brasileira de Linguística Computacional – EBRALC (VII Brazilian School of Computational Linguistics), which is to be held from November 4th to November 5th, 2014.
This year’s ELC intends to address the theme “Corpus, technology and culture”. In Brazil, despite significant advances in the last decade, studies and research results in these areas still require visibility because they have been developed only in some universities, restricting their recognition to some areas of Computer Science and Linguistics. The event aims to show, by fostering contributions among these areas, how Brazilian society can get benefits, either by concrete products which serve immediate purposes, or by the financial aid provided for research on language that leads to a series of contemporary reflections.
Papers in the relevant areas will be selected, including completed papers whose research is substantial and whose results are relevant to the study area (whether practical or theoretical), and works in progress with partial results and with proposals or demonstration of software. There will be no parallel sessions.
It is hoped that submitted papers address how the proposed research articulates with Corpus Linguistics, making summaries and / or advances in theory, methodology, assumptions or presenting empirical results related to Corpus Linguistics related areas.

Guidelines for paper submission
The norms for submission of papers for both categories are as follows:
(1) COMPLETED RESEARCH PAPERS
Completed research papers must be submitted as short articles (maximum 1800 words) for oral or poster presentation, both of which have the same status and the same treatment. The submission format is the same, and both the author and the committee of reviewers can indicate the format of presentation. However, we emphasize that the final choice will be made by the scientific committee, considering the format which transmits the contents of the research in the most effective and informative way. Submission norms are as follows:
- Contain between 1000 and 1800 words (written in Portuguese, English or Spanish, which determines the language in which the work will be presented)
- Display title centered and in capital letters, font Times New Roman, size 12, bold;
- Skip a line and begin the text, written in font Times New Roman, size 12, normal, without footnotes, phonetic symbols or unusual characters in the default Microsoft Word format.
- We also ask that the authors do not identify themselves in the body of the text so as not to compromise the evaluation process.
The short articles must contain the following parts:
context / motivation of the research;
short review of the literature;
objective(s) of the work;
methodology;
result(s);
conclusion / recommendations.
Submitted articles will be subject to review by the Scientific Committee of the event, which shall observe the following aspects: relevance of the work to Corpus Linguistics, quality of research (technical, methodological, analytical), text quality (clear and objective writing), attention to standards established for its preparation, originality. Along with the response the presentation format will be indicated: oral or poster.
(2) RESEARCH PAPERS IN PROGRESS
This session of the ELC is intended for presentation of not-finished research papers in Corpus Linguistics, whose results are not yet indicative or expressive. Such works must be submitted as an abstract of no more than 500 words for presentation in a special session, with a plenary phase called "1-minute insanity", in which the work is presented in 1 slide in 1 minute, followed by exhibition of the work to interested participants, in the presenter’s own laptop on a table with chairs to accommodate presenters and the audience interested in the presentation. Submission norms are as follows:
- Contain between 300 and 500 words (written in Portuguese or English, which determines the language in which the work will be presented)
- Display title centered and in capital letters, font Times New Roman, size 12, bold;
- Have the author's name (and name of the advisor, if applicable) and institution indicating line of research, starting date of the survey and possible completion date or defense of the study.
- Skip a line and begin the text, written in font Times New Roman, size 12, normal, without footnotes, phonetic symbols or unusual characters in the default Microsoft Word format.
The body of the abstract must indicate the proposal of the work, the investigation questions and the methodology selected, and also mention possible expected results. References should be limited to 05 listed immediately below the abstract text.
Important Dates
Final date for submission of abstracts: July 31, 2014
Evaluation period of papers: from the date of receiving the paper until July 31, 2014.
Notification to authors: for works in progress - once accepted; for plenary presentations and posters – from August 1, 2014.
Event Days: November 6 and 7, 2014.
