When Linguistics and Technology meet up: advances, questions and perspectives

Lecturer: Heliana Mello (UFMG, CNPq)

In this lecture, it will be presented the results of the exchanges established between technological advances and linguistic analysis of the last two decades. It will also be shown that the cross-fertilization among computational and statistics techniques and linguistic analysis has made possible the empirical study of language, so that scientific responsible and testable conclusions can be made. The accomplishments of Natural Language Processing will serve as examples in order to approach the study of spontaneous speech by means of acoustic signals pairing with transcriptions, and their consequences. By way of conclusion, pending issues and possibilities for future research will be outlined, as well as the current need for programming and statistics disciplines which are part of the humanities syllabus will be emphasized.
